Derek has spent the past 19 years using engagement, connection, and humor as effective tools to work with teens, adults, couples, and families in his role as a therapist. Throughout his career, he has practiced across a wide range of settings, including educational, cultural, healthcare, and legal environments. He remains a strong believer in the principle that “the best predictor of a positive outcome is the alliance and connection created with a client.”
Derek is known for his ability to connect with reluctant or apprehensive clients through a gentle, approachable style. In addition to his clinical work, he has worked as a headlining comedian for the past 10 years, an experience that has strengthened his ability to navigate difficult conversations in an engaging and effective manner.
His therapeutic approach is often described as solution-focused and narrative-based, with an emphasis on identifying and challenging cognitive distortions. Derek is also trained in hypnotherapy, which he incorporates to help clients manage panic, reduce anxiety, and enhance mindfulness.
